Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Nature Photography...And More!
May 27–31, 2009 - Hot Springs, South Dakota
ALL INCLUSIVE!
You get there, we take care of the rest!
On one of our many long road trips to a photo shoot, we started talking about a whole list of “wouldn’t it be cool if’s…”. “Wouldn’t it be cool if Canon came out with a 100-400 lens without a variable aperture, wouldn’t it be cool if we could integrate a hydration pack into our photo belt harness, wouldn’t it be cool if there was a Chick-Fil-A at the next exit, I’m starving…”, you know really earthshaking stuff.
Only slightly sleep deprived, we then come up with the thought “Wouldn’t it be cool if there was a boot camp style course for nature photographers. You know…the kind of thing where you could go and learn everything you ever wanted to know about nature photography.” So after a few more miles, and a lot more brainstorming, the “Total Exposure” concept was born.
In “Total Exposure” our goal is to provide the aspiring or seasoned nature photographer with exposure to as wide a range of nature photography subjects and techniques as possible (get it…exposure to a wide range of subjects…Total Exposure…exposure settings on a camera….okay, it was late and we were trying really hard to be clever :^) ).
This is an ongoing series of workshops that will be held at locations all over the country. We have selected locations that give us the flexibility to photograph a huge variety of subjects in a reasonable distance from our “base camp”, so we can devote plenty of time not just to the photography, but also to covering all the other stuff you need to know as a nature photographer. We break each segment down into core areas; technical, field craft, light and composition, and special techniques. With this breakdown, we help you build a foundation where the technical becomes intuitive and you can focus on composing great images.

For "Total Exposure - Hot Springs" we will provide you with opportunities to photograph a wide variety of subjects, and educate you on the tips and techniques to capture great images of each of them. From wild mustangs, elk, pronghorn, and birds of prey, to waterfalls and mountain vistas in the Black Hills, we will have a tremendous variety of subjects to cover every style of nature photography

October 8-13, 2009 - Belle Fourche, South Dakota
Winter, 2010 - Belle Fourche, South Dakota
ALL INCLUSIVE!
You get there, we take care of the rest!
Join us where the open prairie meets the Black Hills in western South Dakota for an amazing six day workshop photographing working cowboys on a sprawling cattle ranch.
For this workshop, we will be on a working cattle ranch, photographing genuine folks who live the life, and are cowboy to the core. These are not professional models, just honest hard working cowboys and girls. In other words, this is as authentic as it gets, and we promise you will not see a rhinestone anywhere on this workshop.
We'll photograph a huge variety of action, scenery, and subjects, including cowboy portraits, riding, roping, running horses, close-ups of cowboy gear and tack, horse pushes, cattle pushes, farrier work, and more. Led by award winning professional photographers, this will be your best opportunity to photograph authentic working cowboys and cowgirls on a real ranch setting in the Dakotas. And when we say “real” and “authentic”, just remember this is a working ranch, so you’ll have to watch where you step!
So go ahead pop that “Open Range” DVD in the player, start getting inspired, and make plans this fall to join us as we photograph the real west!

February 25th – March 1st, 2010 - Triple D, Kalispell, Montana
Join Outdoor Photo Workshops for our “Winter Wildlife” photography workshop, where we will photograph a huge variety of animals, with the stunning landscapes of western Montana as our backdrop. Here we will have the opportunity to photograph some of the most amazing predators from North America and around the world. Think wolves in the snow, mountain lions silhouetted along a rocky ridge, or bobcats sipping from a stream, you know the cool stuff nearly every nature photographer wants to photograph! Each day will be chock full of photo opportunities paired up with our detailed instruction on photo techniques, as well as discussions on the behavior and biology of each animal we observe, and daily photo critique sessions.
We will be photographing these animals at Triple D, in Kalispell, Montana, just southwest of Glacier National Park. One of our core principles at OPW is that at heart we are conservationists and nature lovers, and we have chosen to work with Triple D because they share our same passion for wildlife and the natural world. As photographers, it is difficult, and in some cases nearly impossible, to see and photograph many of these animals in the wild. Working with an organization like Triple D gives us unparalleled access to these incredible animals, while enabling us to provide an in-depth education experience as well.
So join us in Kalispell for a photo workshop that will be a winter wonderland of wildlife (okay, try saying that 10 times fast…!)
